Don't Waste- Create

Re-use trash, be aware of natural resources, and avoid littering.
By: Charmaine Futch

ABOUT

Objective: Students will be able to create new things out of recycled materials.

The goal is to bring awareness to students about resources, and why it is important to recycle and avoiding waste. This matches the 3rd grade science curriculum for Safe Racer. It requires the students to learn the importance of recycling materials and using them to create a safe racer car.

About

Needs

To complete this project you will need access to a classroom with desks for students to work. You would also need access to devices for students to use to research information. You need to give your students time to conduct research and time to collect enough materials to use for their safe racer car.

Project Plan

The students will be given a month to work on this project. The first week I will place the students into groups of 4. The students will have time to conduct research on why it is important to recycle, reduce and reuse materials. They will also choose a online and offline activity to focus on each week. Through out the month, students are expected to bring materials in from home for their safe racer car. They will use those materials to create a safe racer car and compete with other students.

Evaluation

I will evaluate each safe racer car using the same criteria for each group. I will write down the weight of each car. I will also measure how far each car traveled for all 3 trials. The car that travels the furthest will be the winner!

This rubric below will be used to evaluate each group. The rubric is linked to this word document.
